We Found Maya a Home!!

If you’re my friend on Facebook you probably saw me repost something about Maya the Dog. And if you regularly follow my blog you may have seen THIS (http://glamhairus.blogspot.com/2012/11/free-dog-to-good-home.html) post about her too. Well good news… MAYA FOUND A HOME! My very good friend’s neighbors bailed on their rent and left their dog Maya bound to a tree. My girlfriend was fostering the dog until we could find a permanent home. Once I heard the news I was so heart broken and knew I had to get involved.
I posted Mayas story to my FB wall and my friend/neighbor’s cousin contacted me. She lost a dog a couple of weeks prior and the family was devastated, so they wanted to rescue Maya! The only problem was that she lives in California and Maya was in Atlanta, GA. Finding someone to take Maya was the easy part now we had to figure out a way to transport her.
First, we tried to figure out if anyone could drive, meet, or pick her up, but that wouldn’t work with anyone’s schedules. Next, we thought we could fly Maya to Cali, but after researching it, I found out that this is extremely dangerous for dogs! I saw an article (http://travel.nytimes.com/2011/05/22/travel/what-to-know-when-traveling-with-your-pet-practical-traveler.html?_r=0) in the NY Times that said,
“Pet safety has also become a more pressing issue. Incidents of animals being lost, injured or dying have recently risen. Thirty-nine animals died while flying aboard commercial jets in the United States last year, compared with 22 in 2009, according to the Department of Transportation. Thirteen were injured and five were lost.”
After reading that I decided we are not putting this poor, sweet, traumatized girl on a plane! It also inspired me to make people more aware of the dangers of flying your pet in cargo! Finally, we decided on a shuttle service that would pick up Maya from the ATL and take her all the way to Cali by car, safe and sound.
On November 19th, Martha (formally known as Maya) was brought HOME to the Fournier residence! Where she was greeted with open arms to her new family. Not only did Martha get a new family, but she also got a new playmate George.

She’s since been fixed and is sooo happy in her new home with her amazing new family!
It’s good to know that dreams do come true <3

How to Tie a Bowtie

This email came in today from BHLDN and I thought it was so great that I had to share with everyone...

  1. Right-handeds, pull the right side 2-3 inches longer than the left and then loop it over the left side to tie. Left-handeds, replace the word ‘left’ where it says ‘right’ from here on out.
  2. Holding the top piece up to your face, pull the lower piece to the right and fold it across the front so  that it forms half of the bow.
  3. Bring the top piece down over your half-bow.
  4. Fold both ends of the half-bow together in front of you.
  5. Notice the loop created behind your half-bow. Pull the dangling piece toward the right, fold it into your other half-bow, and then back it into (and through) the loop.
  6. Once through, hold on to both the loops and flat pieces, gently tugging and tightening to finish the look. Don't you look handsome!

Homeless Shelter

I love being able to give back to the community, so I just jump at an opportunity to volunteer my time to the homeless shelters around the city. This month myself and a handful of friends went to Breakthrough Urban Ministries women’s homeless intervention shelter.

Here’s their website: http://www.breakthrough.org/

The location holds up to 32 women at a time. The facilities first aim is to meet the immediate needs of food and shelter by providing a clean and comfortable place to sleep and by serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. When guests arrive at Breakthrough, they receive a toiletry kit, a space to shower and are granted access to laundry facilities. Once the basic needs are addressed, guests are able to access a bevy of supportive services designed to help them along their path to self-reliance. Supportive services include on-site primary and mental health care, employment training and housing search assistance and placement.

Breakthrough’s Adult Services program is designed to empower homeless adults to overcome poverty and enjoy the liberty of self-sufficiency in an environment that restores dignity to people who have already had so much stripped away.

It felt great to serve others. I mean that’s why God put here, to serve his people! Dinner consisted of fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, and corn. The Glamhairus group was in charge of bringing desserts and boy did we deliver! We had cakes, cookies, brownies, cobblers… there were so many desserts that I was afraid it was too much, but it was such a treat to all the women they were basically gone when we left. The energy was so infectious at the shelter that we signed up for next month too!

But the women’s shelter needs your help! When I asked what the women could use, I was told whatever you have to give. I thought that was such a sweet answer, but also a red flag that they must really be in need.
The big items needed are…
  • Towels
  • Deodorant
  • Soap
  • Lotion
  • Beauty Products (no hair care needed!)
  • Tissues
  • Tampons
  • Antibacterial hand cleaner
  • Socks
  • Disposable Douches
  •  Blankets
  • Business Attire (for job interviews!)

… but they will take anything you have in your heart to give!
